Stupid Angry Thing

“I don’t want to be an asshole”
Is what you said to me but honestly
I think you might have
Gone beyond that point
‘Cause abandoning your family
It seems to me is usually
The kind of thing most people call
A dick move.

No voices raised in anger
No effort made to stay
Just sorry fam, I’m bored with you
But I’m sure you’ll be ok

Is not if you’re an asshole
It’s your humanity I’m questioning
While you deconstruct
The lives you said you loved
The people here are in crisis
You’ve a front row view
And yet somehow you
Treat it like a humdrum afternoon

Bonds built up for decades
Out of empathy and trust
Torn out by the fucking roots
And thrown under the bus

So baby you’re an asshole
‘Cause here’s the bit I can’t forget
Or even comprehend how to forgive
Scarred by your own parents’ split
Depressed for years
Cried a million tears
How are you now ghosting your own son?

A promise made in DNA
Doesn’t end when it’s betrayed
The wounds you leave him with today
Will bleed for years before they fade
But you won’t see it, you got your way
No strings on you, you’re free to play
So say you love him and then portray
Your Judas role and walk away

Production Notes:

I vividly remember when this song arrived. Sitting in a Planet Fitness locker room after a workout, weeping buckets as the words flowed out like a stream of seemingly endless vomit. It started ugly and only ever seemed to get uglier every time I returned to work on it.
